Meet The McDonnells

Jim and Jane McDonnell have always been the steady foundation in their son Paul’s life. Paul, who has autism, brings joy, curiosity and a unique rhythm to their family. For decades, Jim and Jane have been his informal support system; navigating services, advocating for his needs, and building a life rooted in love and connection.

But now, as they enter their later years, the McDonnells are facing a new challenge: preparing Paul for a future without them.

The systems that once felt accessible have grown more complex. “Things were relatively easy back in the day,” Jim recalls. When they walked into the Mankato Social Security office, they knew the staff, who felt like people who were advocates for the family. Now? “It feels more like we’re standing in front of judges.”

The pandemic only deepened the divide. Paperwork became more confusing, processes more rigid and the personal relationships they once relied on seemed to vanish. For aging caregivers like Jim and Jane, keeping up with these changes while trying to secure a stable future for Paul has felt overwhelming.

That’s where Laura Baker Services Association’s Family Navigation Service (FNS) stepped in.
“I was impressed how well connected [the Family Navigation Specialists] are,” Jim shares. “If we didn’t have FNS, we’d be fighting with the county all the time.”

Their navigator, Samantha, has become more than a resource. She’s a lifeline. From securing food assistance for Paul, to coordinating long-term supports, she’s helped the McDonnells cut through red tape and focus on what matters most: Paul’s well-being.

“I’m very thankful for the help Samantha provides,” Paul says. “I trust her.”

Still, the future weighs heavily. “Will we (will Paul) be able to continue FNS after we’re gone?” Jane asks quietly.

From keeping up with renewal paperwork to understanding what services are available and how to access them, the maze of systems families must navigate to support a loved one with IDD can be overwhelming. For aging parents, that challenge becomes even more daunting as they try to ensure continuity of care while planning for the future.

Family Navigation isn’t just about solving today’s challenges. It’s about building a bridge to the future, so no family has to face that journey alone. It provides clarity, compassion and a steady hand for those working to ensure their loved ones have the support they need to thrive.

At LBSA, we’re honored to walk alongside families like the McDonnells. Their story is a powerful reminder that aging caregivers need more than services. They need partners who understand the journey and help light the way forward.
