Laura Baker School Students Recycle!

Every day the Laura Baker students take turns in the recycling room and shred paper which they collected on campus.  Then once a month a couple of the students take the shredded papers to the recycling center in Northfield.  All of the students really enjoy shredding.

Way to go, Laura Baker!

Another great FSS event!

Last weekend we had another great FSS respite event, this time with a travel and movement theme. We made and decorated passports and keep track of all that we did; hung and stuck stickers on a giant illustrated map, to show where we as a group have been across the world; and learned about the Hmong tradition of story cloths from the St. Olaf Hmong Cultural Outreach.

We ended the event by writing a collaborative poem about our favorite colors. Here we include the final product (in black and white):

Blue is the color of the lake at home;
Kerste likes Red;
Purple is like the night sky;
Green reminds me of spring;
Indigo was the name of my childhood friend;
Yellow makes me think of happiness;
Green grass grows all around, all around…
Green grass grows all around;
Orange is the sky when the sun sets;
I have a Blue Sanyo phone;
Teal is the color of the ocean;
Cadet Blue is calm like water;
Red roses for those you love;
Green is the color of Central Park in the summer;
Black: my shoes, my hair, and my hat;
Green is wild and young;
Green spring trees hold up the sky;
Asparagus is my second favorite vegetable (My first is artichoke);
Sky Blue is actually my favorite color.

Valentine’s Cards!

We would like to thank the PLUS program at Bridgewater Elementary School for making beautiful and thoughtful valentines for the clients and staff of LBSA this year! The lovely cards brightened everybody’s day!

Laura Baker Services awarded “Business of the Year” for 2012 by Northfield Chamber of Commerce!

“We are very pleased and honored to receive this award:” says Executive Director Sandi Gerdes.
2011 saw us embark upon a campaign to raise $1.3 million to support a $2.5 million capital improvement project that rebuilt two cottages and will build two more, replacing an aged dormitory.
LBSA is the 11th largest employer in Northfield, with a $2.9 million payroll annually, whcih translates to a $10.44 million impact on the community, both direct and indirect. We have seen a 19% growth over the last 5 years, with a 5% growth in employment.

The Chamber banquet is on March 8th at the Grand. Tickets are $30 and are available through their office.

Ability Awareness

Recently, boys from Boy Scout Troop 313 participated in a drumming group with Laura Baker clients, as part of their Disability Awareness Merit Badge. Previous to this, they had an opportunity to learn about People First language, disability etiquette, a little about what we do here at LBSA, and types of assistive technology. The coolest part was watching the boys go from seeming apprehensive to saying things like, “People with disabilities are actually fun to be with!” The boys have more requirement to complete, but are off to a good start. Thank you to everyone (parents, LBSA staff, and our enthusiastic clients) for facilitating this experience!

Laura Baker Choir to Sing for “Arts for Martin” at ARTech

Join Northfield’s performing artists–from all disciplines, all ages and all levels, elementary to professional–for an evening of reflection on the life and work of Martin Luther King.

The arts are the evening’s unifying factor in this event. Music, dance, spoken word, poetry and visual art meld together into a performance that thoughtfully and intentionally speaks to the legacy Dr. King left us.

Guest presenter is Mary Easter, Professor of Dance and the Performing Arts Emerita, Carleton College.

We invite you to join us for this meaningful celebration Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7:00 PM at ARTech Charter School, 1719 Cannon Road (behind Perkins restaurant.) Admission is free. For further information call 663-8806, extension 212.

FSS respite events continue

LBSA just wrapped up its first quarter of monthly respite care events and is planning for the next three months!

Craft Bags

Card-making Activity

Winter Scene

Activities this month included holiday card making with potato prints, stamps, collage, and more. We also decorated a wintery scene with snowmen; read winter and holiday time books; and played winter-themed games. At the end of the evening, everyone left with personally decorated bags full of cards and other creations that could be used for gifts over the holidays.

The primary purpose of these events is to provide respite relief for parents with children who have developmental disabilities.

If you haven’t already, sign up your child to receive personal invites in the mail and RSVP each month in advance; and remember to fill out and turn in the enrollment form before arriving. Knowing in advance exactly who who will be attending and their individualized information allows us to prepare by recruiting enough volunteers for one-on-one participation, and to plan a safe and fun evening for all.

Anyone interested in volunteering at our respite events or for other respite services can contact us via email.

Here’s the winter quarter schedule of respite events:

Friday, January 20 from 4-6:30
Saturday, February 18 from 3-5:30
Saturday, March 31 from 3-5:30
