Contemporary newspaper reports referred to the house as “one of the finest in the city.” It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, due to its status as the only remaining example of a brick home of this size and period in Northfield. With an exterior faced in cream brick trimmed with red sandstone, beveled glass and stained glass in various windows, gingerbread-style porches, pocket doors, and extensive use of various hard and soft woods throughout the interior of the home, it has long been regarded as a treasure in Northfield. Inspiring Possibilities, Realizing Dreams

Some dreams don’t cost very much to realize:

“I want to record a CD of my singing.”  “I want to know peace.”

“I want to learn to read.”

Some are expensive:

“I would like to have my own apartment.” “I would like to get married someday.” “I want to enjoy my retirement.”

Some are ordinary:

“I want to volunteer in the community.” “I would like to learn how to make and have friends. “I would like to go camping again someday.

Some are outrageous:

“I want to be a roadie for a rock band.”  “I want to be rich.”

We care about people’s dreams.  This is what makes us different than other service providers—we work hard to make people’s dreams come true. Your yearly gifts create this supportive atmosphere, and we rely upon your faithfulness.

Bruce tells this story about his dreams: “When I go to choir I get to share my talents. I feel like I am part of a team and I have a good time. Recently, we performed at the School for the Blind and I did my Elvis solo there. I got the loudest applause and it made me feel good. I meet with our music therapist twice a month. We play the piano and we are also working on my dream, making a CD. Some of the songs are the “Haunted Mansion”, “Let it Be” by the Beatles, and my all-time favorite song, “Good Lucky Charm” by Elvis. When Jessy asked me to join the choir I didn’t really want to, but I decided to watch them one day instead. After seeing lots of people there I knew, I wanted to come back the next Tuesday and be part of the choir. The rest, they say, is history, and now I call it my Heaven”.

Bruce gets to go to heaven once week because of your gifts. Other clients realize more modest dreams, like learning how to ride a bike. And then there are the big ones, like learning how to read or use a computer.

Herman Melville said: “We cannot lives for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads.” Your gift to help Laura Baker clients realize their dreams has those ripple effects in your life, our community, and the world. We all live in that world. When you help someone else reach a dream, it makes yours that much closer.

Will you make that gift today? This is a gift that changes someone’s world. Whatever size gift you can give — be it $10, $100, $250, $1,000 or more, you are helping someone reach a cherished dream. Your dollars have enormous impact here, and we thank you.
With gratitude,

Sandi Gerdes
Executive Director

P.S. Warning: We can assure you that helping others achieve their dreams is habit-forming! It makes your own dreams seem more achievable.

Cranes for Japan disaster relief

We are sending our origami cranes to a relief effort for Japan. The place where we are sending them donates $2 each to disaster relief. Thanks to Jan McCorkell’s daughter, Grace, one of our longtime volunteers, for making these for last year’s Gala.

Give to the MAX! Starts at midnight!

Last year, this event raised $8,660 for us!

This year, the emphasis is on the NUMBER of donors, not the amount. So please go online and make a gift to help us get that number up.

$20,000 for first place goes to the organization with the most donations. Random names drawn every hour to have $1000 added to their gift. What a great state we live in!

Jane Fenton, Director of Community Relations
